What type of photos do we get in an in-home newborn session?
Hopefully, you’ve read my previous post on what an in-home newborn session is and now you’re wondering what type of photos you’ll get from an in-home newborn session. No matter where your session takes place, you can expect professional photos that are consistent with my style.
Naturally-posed Newborns
Babies are not tacos or frogs. I prioritize baby safety and comfort over anything else. For this reason, I follow the baby’s cue and pose babies naturally, in ways they would normally be. This doesn’t mean I just plop babies on the bed and start clicking away. I’m still very conscious of lighting, angle, composition, colour, and adjusting the baby to enhance the pose (like tucking in their legs or fingers or smoothing out knitted brows).
No Props or Backdrops
Also, in my very strong opinion, babies don’t need to be dressed up in costumes in order to appreciate them for who they are. They don’t need excessive props and backdrops to bring out their cuteness. Babies are cute and precious and doll-like just the way they are. These props and backdrops are very creative and take a lot of time and effort during and after the shoot to put together. I’m not bashing these types of photographs. I have one of these excessive props/backdrop photos of my eldest. She’s sleeping in a wooden basket in the woods, which was fully photoshopped and looks absolutely amazing! but it’s not the image that created a connection with my daughter. It’s not an image where I can remember how she looked in it or what was happening during that frame. The images I do remember (even down to how my daughter smelled that day) were the ones where she was naked and I was holding her in my arms against a white backdrop. It’s simple, it’s genuine, and that’s what I strive to create for you.
Clean, Timeless, and Modern portraits
When you take away all the fluff, you remove time and space from the image - creating a timeless portrait that will stand the test of time. This emphasizes the subject in the portrait - your baby. Y
My style for newborn photography is clean and modern. To achieve this look, light plays a major part in the feel of the image. I feel that babies are pure and soft and that’s the light you’ll see in my images - soft light with a bit of contrast to create that modern look. I save the dark and moody for my maternity and engagement shoots :)
